George Hoffer (Virginia Commonwealth University), who has studied the American automotive industry for 40 years, explains why it’s in decline and may be vanishing before our very eyes. He also says in order to make up a shortfall of funds for public transportation we may soon be charged highway user fees—paying for each mile we drive on major roads. Also featured: 40 years ago, when Neil Armstrong set foot on the Moon, his famous words—“One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”— were then transmitted around the world from the Johnson Space Center in Houston. Historian Kevin Brady (Tidewater Community College) explains how Houston came to be chosen as the site for NASA’s Space Center, home to the Apollo Program and Skylab, and how that choice shaped both the city and NASA itself.
