I’ve always kind of been a casual admirer of Nikki Giovanni and her poetry. I knew she was bold — never afraid to speak truth to power or celebrate Black love. But I saw a whole new side of her as I dug into our archives to put this episode together.

Turns out, she was pretty hilarious. She loved oysters, raw or cooked. But they never made it into her poetry because, as she put it “there are just some things…you don’t talk about picking your nose that much. That’s a private pleasure. It’s not something you want to share with people.” I also had no idea Nikki was so passionate about space travel. She pushed for more Black women astronauts and even dreamed of going to Mars herself.

It was awesome to peel back the layers and get to know the more hidden sides of one the legends of poetry. She will be missed!
